The experience
Kyoto is quietest just after sunrise. The shops on Ninenzaka are still shuttered, the stone lanes are damp from the night, and the only sounds are temple bells and someone sweeping a doorway.
We start at Yasaka Shrine, where you’ll learn how to visit a shrine without feeling like an outsider, then wind through the old lanes of Higashiyama — Ishibe-koji, Nene-no-michi, the famous slopes — to Kiyomizu-dera and its wooden stage above the trees.
Along the way your guide points out the details most visitors walk past: the charms above doorways, the reason the pagoda has survived earthquakes, what the temple water is really for. We finish with matcha and a seasonal sweet in a small tea house.
